The lakes and there formation
If you had an above view of the region you would see why the Finger Lakes Region of upstate New York deserves its name. The long lakes form together an astonishing ressemblance to fingers of a hand. There are different version and origins of how the lakes formed depending upon who you ask, theses stories can be as multiple as the lakes themselves.
According to the Ancient native American legends, the lakes are a divine handprints on the land left by the Great Spirit when he was blessing the soil. While blessing the land the spirit’s hands were outstreched and where placed exactly where the lakes now stand and each one left an impression of the spirit’s fingers. The hollows that were created very quickly filled themselves up with crystal-clear rain and river water and this explains how the Finger Lakes were formed such a long time ago.
While this story leaves more up to the imagination, modern science has also tried to find out the origins of the lakes, and recent researches have suggested that the Finger lakes were formed by centuries-old glacial activity which moved and therefore dug the ground. These glaciers, which slid down from Canada up North, dug out streams and rivers. They left minor holes and hollows which later on become the basis for lakes, and, they also have a big influence on the landscape and the contour of the land. These natural causes over the years have created one of the best area’s in the United States.
Which ever version you prefer to think as true there is one thing that is for certain, the Finger Lakes Region is truly blessed. It is a land of unparalleled natural beauty, unique geological features, full of wild life and most of all eleven immense spectacular and magnificent lakes.
